cornell bernard tells us from san jose as the mayor is ready for the state of the city address. cornell? >> normally it is a word no one wants to hear but the mayor will make it a big part of the state of the city address. the word is "taxes." the mayor says the city needs a sales tax increase and will call on community leaders to organize a campaign to support police and fire services and restore pay for workers who had to take cuts to balance the budget. a poll suggests that voters could be willing to do that. there is 70 percent support if a quarter percent sales increase but 57 percent for half a percent increase. the earliest it would be on the battle is next year, the 5th sales tax measure voters have approved since the mayor took office in 2007. the state of the city address is underway at 6:30 right here at city hall. >> fairfield police are asking for your help in finding the killer of a 13-year-old girl. the guardian for the 13-year-old reported her missing last thursday evening. her body was found friday m
celebrations after the giants' world series win. our reporter is joining us live from the mission district which saw a lot of vandalism back in october and some merchants are understandably nervous. >> reporter: they are nervous understandably. a lot of them suffered devastating destruction during the world series celebration. to that and city leaders promise their response will be different. they promise it will be faster and twice as many police on the streets as there were after the world series. checkpoints will be in place today and tomorrow. part of the strategy will be to get all the garbage cans off the streets. you may recall those cans were set on fire during the chaos after the giants won the world series. muni will run diesel buses that can be quickly rerouted to avoid trouble. they are taking different approaches. one hired a security guard to watch their restaurant. employees will stay behind after closing their shob to ensure the store's safety. >> the door is closed for the game but we'll stick around until the game is over. we want to ensure the windows are being tagged an

together following the shooting death of two officers in the line of duty. cornell bernard joins us live with what we are lending about the shootout. cornell? >> a very, very sad day in santa cruz, a city in mourning mourning the death of two believes killed in the line of document when they came to the home, at north branciforte, the suspect opened fire. they have been combing every inch of the crime scene. we have new video. several cars were reof -- removed from the property, a white luxus with bullet holes. detective sergeant butch baker and his colleague, elizabeth but her lost their lives on tuesday when they responded to the home. they were met with gunfire. the officers were killed. we were overhead minutes later. half an hour later the 35-year-old suspect was spotted and chased by police. he was shot and killed during the pursuit. police chief says his department now is coming to grip with the tragedy. >> there are not words to describe how i feel personally about there and how my department is reacting to this horrific tragedy. >> the chaplains are counseling fellow officers to
